categories in home page

hi guys, i have searched a lot for 3 days now without success in these forums and the whole web, what i want is simple, i just want to display the categories in the home page, my site is a simple blog with posts about diferent things with multiple categories, i dont want the posts to be show in the frontpage but the categories with a featured image or even just a text
