I added a plug in called Extended Categories, then uninstalled and added about 30 empty categories and subcategories. Now I’ve tried to install and activate 3 plug ins that will have expandable categories to show subcategories (click to view subcategories, click to hide) and none of them worked. Then I noticed if I make the default Categories widget current then click edit, it removes itself from the list!

Obviously something was going on with WordPress and so I bit the bullet and backed up, then replaced all wp files with originally downloaded ones to take the site back to unconfigured, but this didn’t fix the issue! Must it therefore be something in the way the database is configured that needs to be fixed? I could replace the database with a backup but that will mean a lot more work.

    Any suggestions anyone?

So I restored the database to what it was before and then broke it again by installing wp-dtree-30 which is compatible 2.3 or higher, but only up to 2.3.1. Shows you should be careful about version compatibility! Extended Categories worked perfectly, just didn’t do what I wanted it to and wp-dtree-30 I’m sure works well with the correct version.

Now I need to start recustomizing the site…
