  • Hey guys,

I’m currently using a theme that has it’s own builder. Alas, that builder doesn’t work on category and tag pages. Is there an easy way to work around that?

I’m in no way a coder and wouldn’t know how to write PHP, so that wouldn’t really work for me. I’m searching for a way to melt a category with a page, use a page as a category or make a category a proper page.

Any ideas? I thought about a quick and dirty way and create a page with the same slug as the category to “overwrite” the category page, but I’m not sure if that could cause technical or SEO issues.

    Grateful for any tips

  • Using pretty permalinks, Page addresses have just the page slug, but taxonomies have the taxonomy slug and the term slug. WordPress does not supply anything for the address of just taxonomy slug (you get a 404).
So, doing nothing special, it would be:
    site/my-page the My Page page
    site/category a 404
site/category/my-category list of posts in My Category
    site/my-category the My Category page

You can make a Page with the same slug as the taxonomy name, but the original list page will still exist. In my theme, I supply a page template for those pages, to use the slug to get the list of all the terms in that taxonomy and show links to them after the content. That way the URL makes sense and you don’t get a 404.

Hey Joy, thanks again for your time. That’s pretty much what I want to do. I got rid of the category base via Yoast, so a page and category page with the same topic would have the same slug and URL. I tested what my theme does in this case and it seems like it ignores the page and shows the category archive view. So my quick and dirty solution wouldn’t even work.
