Categories all lead to 404 Page

    Can anyone help me work out why when I click on a category link I end up on a 404 page on my blog?

    I have used the categories widget I list all my categories automatically on my archive page and in both instances every single category leads to my 404 page.

    I asked the theme developers (Cutline) and they took a look and said it was not being caused by their theme and to ask at WordPress support forums… so I’m asking…

    Try updating your permalink structure.

    Administration > Settings > Permalinks

    What do you mean by that?

    We removed the permalink structure we’d added (which we needed to mimic as close as possible our previous Blogger structure). But when we tested it it made no difference to the category problem, they still returned 404 errors but now we also got 404’s happening on all the pages people were coming in on external links on so we put it back.

    categories with no posts in them will return a 404.

    Every single category returns a 404.

    We have a lot of posts and they pretty much all have categories so the categories should be bringing up results when clicked on.
