Please excuse me if this has been answered before feel free to direct me to the URL however I was unable to find it upon looking myself. I am using the newest versions of WordPress, and MultiSite, and Suffusion Theme.

The problem I’m coming into is that some of my content displayed say on the main page is category based (Magazine View) IE I choose the categories to display certain content like “News” on my main landing page. My current setup is as follows:

Main Page: No Sub Pages – Magazine View
Site 1-6 Content is on this site via category, posts, links etc

Since that information like headlines, excerpts etc are being done via the Category and is unable to pull that information from another site which is located in a sub directory. Is there anyway using the theme that I could have like categories that would be shared among all the sites, like a News category, and a headline category for instance?

Thank you for your help in this matter as I have been beating my head on this topic for nearly a week now.

    Jason

  • Are you using sitewide tags to pull the posts to the front page?

Yes I am having them pull to the front page, which I have figured how to do correctly. Problem is because of the menu, many widgets etc pull from the category information and I don’t have that ability with multisite. (At least not that I have found) Thank you for responding I look forward to hearing from you.

I’m not sure what you mean by this.

If your sub-blogs each have a category called “news” and you pull posts to the main blog, the main blog will have a category called “news” and show all posts from all blogs in that category.

That’s actually pretty much exactly what I am trying to do. Have only the ‘news’ categories from each of the sub blogs pulled to the main page. Problem is with sitewide tags it pulls all posts from all blogs, or all posts from a single blog ID. The other issue is it does not list the summary, rather the entire article, and does not link back to the original article on the sub site..

    For example:
http://www.lifetimegamers.com/wii (I’m finally listing my site although still in design so bare with me) But say I post a news article on the Wii subdirectory, it will pull to the main page ok good.

I post a review on the wii section, and it will also show on the main page. Now if you click that article it takes you to the .com root domain copy of the original article, and not to the actual indexed article. By this I mean my entire front page is not indexed to avoid the duplicate content filter.

The other problem is as it may copy that category also, and put on the main page, when I create my nav bar it will all link to the copy articles rather than the category on the wii section. Many may not see this as a problem but to create the drop down menu with the Suffussion theme requires the use of categories, can’t do a hiarchy via links.

Hopefully you better understand what I am trying to do, please excuse the length of this post. Also excuse spelling/grammar etc as I have not even been up 10 minutes yet lol.

Oh and on a side note the sitewide tags page isn’t being created for some unknown reason. Right now the only way to access the tags is by going the subdirectory/tags IE mysite.com/wii/tags/TAGNAME where as site tags is supose to create it at mysite.com/tags which is not working.

I think you’re unclear on sitewide tags’ functionality. It’s not a TAGS page (I know, I know).

Your TAGs will remain at site/subdir/tags/TAG
Your post will be DUPLICATED at mainsite
The post on the mainsite should redirect you to SUBSITE. Which … it’s not and that I defer to Andrea.

    Thread Starter jasoncox83

    (@jasoncox83)

Yeah it’s redirecting to the duplicated post on the main blog. Thanks or the info on the sites. On the example it listed basicly a page that is created that is a big tagcloud which when clicked would list the articles on all subsites within that tag name. That was per the information given on their site.

Still have the category issue though.I was gonna recap but it will end up fairly lengthy so please see info above in prior post on issue with categories lol.

When the post is duplicated, the tags and cats are (logically) pulled in as well. The ‘read more’ link (or the subject title, forget which) should point back to the source site (i.e. subsite) though. I don’t remember if that’s a theme thing or not…

They’re both, basically, which makes things terribly less clear 😉 You don’t LOSE subsite/tags, you GAIN an extra.

By this I mean my entire front page is not indexed to avoid the duplicate content filter.

You don;t have to worry about this – the posts are marked so google knows which one is canonical.

Use the custom menu feature to put the right links in your nav bar.

Also – if you have categories on the main site that are the same as some of the blog names… you’re gonna have some issues there.

Tho I’m not exactly sure what you;re saying is not working right, because when I visit the main page and click on headlines, I go to the sub-blogs.

Many may not see this as a problem but to create the drop down menu with the Suffussion theme requires the use of categories, can’t do a hiarchy via links.

You can create a custom menu in Appearance → Menus and include pretty much anything in any hierarchy. Suffusion will let you include that menu in any of the navigation bars. You are not restricted to categories.

Thank you for the help folks, I think this issue is nearly resolved although not quite yet.

As to the menu with this theme I can only create a drop down for pages, and categories that’s it. The ability to use links will only allow me to create 1 single link with a drop down whereas I would need 6 of them one for each sub site so standard would not work.

They are now redirecting, not sure what was wrong but it is now working thank you ‘Andrea_r’ (not sure if I tagged her right?). What issues would I have as when it copies the post to the main page (not indexed) it also copies the tags, and categories associated with it. (sitewide tags)

So in the end the main issue currently then is the navagation associated issue. I can only include with the WP built in Pages,Posts, and Categories, and individual links. With the Suff theme it pulls Only pages, and categories, and can create a drop down with a single link structure. IE Wii-Reviews-etc would be in the form of a drop down menu. The problem is I am unable to pull the category information over from the other subsites.
My site Nav would be something like this with a “-” representing a sub to the parent.
    News
Wii-News-reviews Etc (It’s own sub site IE sub directory)
Ps3-News-reviews Etc (It’s own sub site IE sub directory)
PC-News-reviews Etc (It’s own sub site IE sub directory)
DS-News-reviews Etc (It’s own sub site IE sub directory)
PSP-News-reviews Etc (It’s own sub site IE sub directory)
Xbox360-News-reviews Etc (It’s own sub site IE sub directory)
Other-News-reviews Etc (It’s own sub site IE sub directory)

What would the entire purpose of this is so that I customize which widgets are in which sections, and for the simplified use of basicly child themes in an easier to change admin rather than editing code for child themes. Keep in mind If I do select the categories that are carried over from the posts it directs me to a category page on the main site (not the sub site which is where they would be originating from) As the categories, and tags are being copied with the posts.

Ok I think that’s everything in a nutshell. I really can’t think of a better way to explain this…Oh what I wouldn’t give for a 5 minute conversation with someone that knows multisite structure inside and out lol.

.Oh what I wouldn’t give for a 5 minute conversation with someone that knows multisite structure inside and out lol.

well , there’s two of us in this thread who *do*… 😉

No, that is incorrect, and the theme author (above) has also given you the same answer I did – use the Custom menu feature. the little “link” box can link to anywhere – even other places in your site. And you can use multiple “link” boxes in the custom menu. And you can put in custom links to custom sub-menu items there.

The menu you want to have is entirely do-able. Just go build it in the Custom Menu area.

    Thread Starter jasoncox83

    (@jasoncox83)

Ok so if I follow correctly you are referring to (not the theme) but WP itself’s ability to insert custom links…Or are you referring to the theme’s ability to insert custom links? Seems I nearly got the understanding just need a bit of clarification so to speak. I know there are a couple ways to do custom menus the one with WP can’t do sub menus’s that I’m aware of only custom links in the nav. The Suff theme can have a link name then sub links under it in the main navagation bar although not being able to do multiples would be the problem there.
I again would like to thank you for your assistance I am so close to getting this figured out that I can taste it.

the one with WP can’t do sub menus’s that I’m aware of only custom links in the nav.

    Yes, it can.

    Themes -> Menus.

    (@jasoncox83)

Ok I’m sorry let me reiterate, and please correct me if I”m wrong…(I read that and didn’t see anything about sub menus in drop down menus) I can select that sub page yes but how would I do that as a drop down menu with the WP menu (using custom links) If you have a link for that would be great. Most of the codexes I have found, and read aided me in the creating, and managing of the multisite.
