Categories 404'ing – tried all usual stuff

Hi all, we’re in the process of building a clients website and none of the categories, tags or custom categories will work, they all 404.

They are on the same hosting as other customers development sites and they are all working fine. The only difference with this one is we took over the build from another company.

I’ve tried:
– resetting the permalinks
– deleting the htaccess and resetting the permalinks
– deactivating all my plugins
– applying the twentytwelve theme

Nothing changes, they always 404 – any other ideas??
