Support » Plugin: Broken Link Checker » Careful with Use

  • Broken Links Checker is very useful if you have an older blog with a lot of links. It will find bad links and makes it easy to correct them, including comment links. If you link to a key old article that had gone off-line, it will even point to the same at archive.org. Very handy feature.

However, BLC will also often find links bad that were simply slow loading. So you have to rechack the links it suggests before removing them. Many will be fine.

Also, once installed, it will recheck your links at the set interval. Several sites warn that the plugin causes resource thrashing. If you have a heavy volume site, you don’t want this one running in the background when under heavy load. One host said its a plugin they’ll uninstall to keep the server responsive. Hostgator and WPMU recommend against using it.

I’d suggest you deactivate it after use and just use it periodically as required. Alternately, you can use a web links checking service but these are not as easy to update.
