Support » Fixing WordPress » CAPTCHAs When GD, PBM, and ImageMagick are not available?

  • The free host I’m using now provides PLENTY of space and bandwith, non-intrusive ads, php… the whole nine yeards.. well maybe only 5 yards: there is no GD installed, no image manipulation package, and no plans to rectify the situation.

Is there a PHP application one can install into shared hosting WITHOUT root access, and no shell access to provide image handling features for WordPress plugins to generate CAPTCHA images?

  • Hmmm. That’s a good question. I don’t know offhand of any way to do an image-generation library that doesn’t rely on low-level code to do the dirty work. I had been pondering a ‘cheap CAPTCHA’ of sorts that worked off of uploaded graphics files from a pc.

The other option is non-graphic CAPTCHAs. There was a haiku one I saw, and it’d be pretty easy to create a “Please enter the 5th word from the above sentence” plugin. That’s actually a neat idea, now that I think of it! 😉

I’d be interested to hear if anyone knows of a ‘free service’ that via php or javascript would generate a captcha image for you and return a link to the image. Kind of a weird approach, but could be done.

I’d go with the non-graphical approach, plus something like spam-karma, or cg-antispam, or hash check plugins.
