• Akismet is doing a great job protecting my site’s comments from spam, however, I was wondering if there is a captcha plugin for WP that can be used on a contact form (and not the comment form)?

I am using a regular formmail.php script on my site, and after a recent issue with someone trying to use my email address to send out spam (and my site being temporarily suspended) my hosting company suggested that I use some sort of captcha script on my contact form.

    Any suggestions?

  • Dagon Design has a plugin for contact forms that I like, but it’s a whole contact form system, so it may not be for you. (I like it a lot, though, it’s very customizable, and has ability to send automatic replies. Slight learning curve to his system, but nothing that hard.)

It has a very simply captcha form — no obscuring or distortion of the letters/code to be entered, they are just presented as a easy-to-read graphic displaying numbers that change with every reload. So perhaps it may well be defeatable these days, but I haven’t had problems with it myself.

Here’s an example of one I have installed:

(Not my website, so please don’t use it to contact me.)

Here’s the link to the plugin: Dagon Design’s Form Mailer

Later edit: Just noticed that recent versions of the plugin allow the use of the ReCaptcha service as an option as well.
