Support » Plugin: Gutenberg » Can’t verbalize how badly this is making me feel

  • A)

At the time of this writing there are 118 one-star reviews, vs 69 five-star reviews. In other words there is overwhelming opinion AGAINST this addition to core.

BUT there does not seem to be a consideration on the part of WordPress core team to NOT go ahead with this addition.

A typical response by the developer to a reviewer begging for this NOT to be put in core is:

First thanks for your review, all feedback matters as work continues on this project.

In other words it is going into core no matter how the community feels about it.

That makes me feel very powerless and very insignificant and not respected.

    B)

I have read many concerns about this addition not allowing/supporting amazing custom field plugins like ACF and CMB2.

I have membership sites that I have and will continue to build my income on, sites that use custom field plugins, and now I have to be worried that the next major release will not support custom field plugins. In other words, I could wake up one morning and my sites are updated to 5x and the functionality of my sites has been destroyed. Years of work gone. Income gone. I cannot explain how badly that makes me feel.

I could go on but I don’t see the point.

Firstly, @ironfish2 it is important to hear all, hat’s why I am here replying. It’s also worth noting I am not a developer I am the design lead of this project. My comments each time I reply (I try and reply to all posts here), do not ignore feedback. From the reviews things have been worked on, issues made.

That all said, there is consideration and all voices are being listened to. It’s important to take the entire picture, reviews are a part of that picture but not all.

It’s also important to remember that if you want, on day one of 5.0 or using Gutenberg you can turn on the ‘Classic editor’ plugin and still have the experience you have right now. Nothing is going away.

Another context to clear up, ACF is actually what the metaboxes in Gutenberg have been tested by a lot of us on. Gutenberg is not removing existing functionality. Nobody making Gutenberg wants to cause stress. Gutenberg is the WordPress team, there are contributors from a lot of companies, all working together – just like WordPress.

Last, please do not despair as everyone involved in this project like you wants the best for WordPress. You care and are passionate, that’s good. Everyone making Gutenberg also cares. Let’s work together and care, create the best WordPress possible.

The plugin is neither a 1-star or a 5-star piece of work – those are fluff ratings – the better indicator are the 2, 3, and 4-star reviews.
