• I’m using a simple Twenty Eleven child theme. Since upgrading to 3.4.1 (and recently to 3.4.2), I’ve been unable to upload new images that weren’t in my library before the upgrades. The images seem to go into my media library, but lack the tiny visual icon in the list. When I hit “show” and then “edit,” the image appears, but I can’t insert it, either from my computer, by URL, or from the media library.

I know that there’ve been myriad posts on this subject, and I’ve tried several things, all to no avail. I’ve disabled all plug-ins and changed the permissions numbers. I’ve trashed the page and rebuilt it. Nothing seems to work. Anyone got any other suggestions? It would be much appreciated.

  • Have you tried resetting permalinks?

Krishna, thanks. But I’m not quite sure what you mean. My permalinks are set to post name. Are you suggesting setting them to default or something else?

No problem, just set it to default, save it and set again to your present post name and save it again.

Hmm. The permalinks thing didn’t work. All of the images uploaded pre-upgrade are in my media library with visual icons and usable on any new page. All of the images that I’ve uploaded post-upgrade appear in the media library with names only–no visual icon. I can’t insert them into any page. In fact, I can’t insert images from anywhere — my computer or library or by URL.

Now try resetting all plugins and revert to Twenty Eleven theme and see if the problem persists.

Krishna, I’ve disabled the few plugins I had, and nothing changed. I should reactivate them? Also, do I risk losing stuff if I reactivate the Twenty Eleven theme, thus deactivating my child theme?

If the photo icons don’t reappear in my media library and/or gallery, do I then try to upload the same images again?

And, finally, whether this works or not, I do want to go back to my child theme, right? Such stupid questions, so little time.

do I risk losing stuff if I reactivate the Twenty Eleven theme, thus deactivating my child theme?

    You shouldn’t do, no.

I had to de-activate google libraries plug in and all works well now. Once that plug in is updated I will reactiavte.

Yes, Esmi, I have taken your missives about creating children to heart and worried about cutting mine loose. Thanks. Philophotog, I never used Google libraries. All my plug-ins are deactivated. I should be able to insert images without any plug-ins, anyway. Nothing, so far, seems to work.

Can you post your site URL?

    Thread Starter theecoist

    (@theecoist)

Sure. It’s peterkobel.com. The new page on which I can’t insert newly uploaded images is peterkobel.com/green-roofs-green-cities/.

Can you create a new test post with a new image? You can even use a dummy and delete it after testing.

Hey Krishna. Here’s a test I did with an old blog post I wrote. Uploaded the images from my desktop.

    http://peterkobel.com/the-buzz-on-elephants/

The images are in my media library sans icons.

Are you using the HTML editor or visual editor? Can you open the post in HTML editor and see if the image link is there?

    Thread Starter theecoist

    (@theecoist)

Well, I use the visual editor to edit and post. But I just looked at the page in HTML and the code for the two images reads:

    <a href="http://peterkobel.com/the-buzz-on-elephants/lucy-king/" rel="attachment wp-att-328"><img class="alignleft size-full wp-image-328" title="Lucy King" src="http://peterkobel.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/Lucy-King.jpg" alt="" width="200" height="151" /></a>

    and

    <a href="http://peterkobel.com/the-buzz-on-elephants/180px-elephant_near_ndutu/" rel="attachment wp-att-329"><img class="alignleft size-full wp-image-329" title="180px-Elephant_near_ndutu" src="http://peterkobel.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/180px-Elephant_near_ndutu.jpg" alt="" width="180" height="240" /></a>
