• I get this message when I try to upload a header image in Ver 3.8.1
“The uploaded file could not be moved to wp-content/uploads/2014/01”

So I created the directory with FileZilla and uploaded the image to the folder manually and it isn’t showing in the media library.

    Tried deactivating plug-in’s, no difference.

Also nothing happens if I try to upload an image through the ‘Customise’ menu – nothing happens, no upload, no error messages, nothing!

Only installed Ver 3.8 yesterday (new blog), got it up and running, upgraded to Ver 3.8.1 today.

    What’s going on??

    Thanks for the reply chaturaka.
I had already selected a permalinks option and saved before I had this issue. can’t see how this might affect an uploading issue?
there is no htaccess file in either the server root directory or any other directory. followed the installations exactly, pretty frustrating when instructions are incorrect / incomplete /

surprising that nobody can help here

Uploading a file into a folder via FTP does not add it to the media library. You need to use the library function(s) for that.

Also, review what the file permissions on that folder are.

Since you can upload the image, you could simply add the proper HTML to the header for this.

That all said, a site link can help us sort some things out for you. Please provide a URL that demonstrates this issue.

And, did you also just setup the domain? You may need to allow time for proper DNS propagation.

    thanks for the input.
yes, I can appreciate just ftp’ing a file to the image folder won’t necessarily work, but it was an attempt after the ‘normal’ way (via dashboard/themes/headers/upload file) wouldn’t work in the first place.

I reviewed folder permissions, made sure they were all 777, still no joy.

the site URL http://www.walksforyou.com is visible, but how can I provide a URL to an error message in my dashboard?

    thanks for any help

Not one file or folder in your WP install should be set to public write permissions (777). That is major security issue and I prompt you to immediately return all files and folders to default permissions (but read on).

Above, of course applies to a site running on Apache or other Linux based server. You are running on IIS7 (A Windows Server).

First, the file permissions scheme is different on a Windows Server.
Second, You are also only running on PHP5.2.17.

    Consult your webhost and:

    A) Ask how to set permissions properly for a WP site within that hosting environment.
    B) Ask to update to at least PHP5.3. Many of us are at 5.4 now.

Or, even better, discuss with host how use an Apache/Linux hosting account for WP instead of IIS7.
