# can't update wordpress version

 * i can’t update my wordpress! still using version 2.8. when i try to update, this
   is the message that i received:

    Warning: copy(F:\inetpub\vhosts\ssvp.org.my\httpdocs\wordpress/wp-admin/includes/
   update-core.php) [function.copy]: failed to open stream: Permission denied in
   F:\inetpub\vhosts\ssvp.org.my\httpdocs\wordpress\wp-admin\includes\class-wp-filesystem-
   direct.php on line 122 Could not copy files.
 * Installation Failed

 * what does that mean? it means it has something to do with my host server? i have
   contacted my host but all he said was asked me to set up a new version of wordpress
   and migrate all data (change server)… but this means having to re-do all over
   again my website, right?… and i don’t know how to do it.
 * (btw, same thing happened when try to update/install plugins)

 * You cannot update from that old of a version in one step; it has to be done incrementally.

 * thanks for the response, lyle.
 * the instructions looks very technical and difficult for me to do. i’m not techie
   savvy actually so fear trying out the steps. i guess i’ll just have to wait to
   see if i can ask a friend to help.
