Support » Fixing WordPress » Cant update WordPress

  • To start, I have yahoo for hosting 🙁 I have an old theme that has been discontinued and wordpress that needs an udpate. A couple days ago, I seen wordpress needed an update, but it said we could not update because MySQL was wrong version I think? So, I tried to update the theme and the whole site went blank, I can not get into wordpress and the site is not live. I called yahoo and they could not seem to fix it over the phone, he said he would send it to someone and the updates would be made and site would be restored. He said it was a database error. Today no updates were made but the site was live so again I tried to update to a new theme and
same thing. Websites offline and cant get into the wordpress dashboard. Call, she says its not their database, its wordpress. Now today before tried to update the theme. I showed we needed a wordpress update but it said we could not. No explanation. No option to update. So why cant I update wordpress? Because I have an old blog ,do I need to rename a database? Any ideas?

He said it was a database error.

He was wrong. Sounds like you are trying to use a theme developed for a more recent version of WordPress in your rather ancient WordPress install. Try switching to the default theme by renaming your current theme’s folder inside wp-content/themes and adding “-old” to the end of the folder name using FTP or whatever file management application your host provides.

Going forwards, you will either need to stick to your old, pre-existing themes or you will need to upgrade WordPress. As you have such an old version of WordPress, you will need to carry out a series of smaller manual upgrades. See Upgrading_WordPress_Extended for the full details. But before that, you need to speak to your hosts about upgrading their version of MySQL.

Ok, yahoo finally updated the MySQL and then I was able to update WordPress and now I cant get back into the dashboard, the page is blank but the website is working.

I am guessing because the theme was discontinued the new version of WordPress won’t support it?

Where do I go from here? Any ideas?

OK, renamed the files and I’m in…thanks so much!
