I just tried updating my PHP version to 5.4 and got internal server errors on all of my networked sites. Is it not possible to update the php version?

Have you had a chance to check/change the php handler?

I’m not sure what that is. I was able to update other cpanels on the same host (that had single WP installs) no problem.

Is there any change in behavior or symptoms if you add…

AddHandler application/x-httpd-php54 .php

..to the top of your .htaccess file?

That’s what I did to change the php version. Internal server errors all around on the multisite occurred as a result.

Is it possible you might have a plugin that’s having a compatibility issue with php 5.4?

I’m running multisite with that exact same htaccess snippet with no problem.

The problem was a php.ini file that was there – once it was removed php5.4 worked fine 🙂
