 * I’ve been running 3.4 and had a problem so updated and still have it. I’m hoping
   someone can help.
 * I’m trying to create a menu. When I go to add items to it the small progress
   circle just continues to circle…and circle…and so on and the items never make
   the menu. I’ve tried different themes in case it was that but sadly no difference.
 * Anyone any idea?
 * This was happening with widgets until I saw a tip about changing the screen options.
   Its not as quick to work with but at least it works then. There’s no similar
   option for menus though.

 * The place to start with something like this is with the plugins and theme. Disable
   all the plugins and switch the theme to default (Twenty Eleven). If the problem
   still exists, then the problem is more likely with WordPress itself and how it
   connects to the database. Chances are since you just updated, the WordPress installation
   is probably fine.
 * If it works when your plugins are turned off, then to find the culprit that is
   causing the problem, turn them back on 1-2 at a time and test it as you go. I
   call this the plugin dance and it is the single most common method for troubleshooting
   many problems in WordPress.
 * If those don’t work, here are couple of the other troubleshooting tricks that
   might help:
 * – [reset the plugins folder](http://codex.wordpress.org/FAQ_Troubleshooting#How_to_deactivate_all_plugins_when_not_able_to_access_the_administrative_menus.3F)
   by FTP or PhpMyAdmin. Sometimes, an apparently inactive plugin can still cause
   problems.
 * – re-uploading all files & folders – except the wp-content folder – from a fresh
   download of WordPress.
 * Here is another thread where a user describes he had a php memory limit issue.
   If all the above fail, that may help: [http://wordpress.org/support/topic/cant-save-custom-menu](http://wordpress.org/support/topic/cant-save-custom-menu)

 * Thanks for the reply. Before I start the dance (I can’t think I’ve added anything
   new in months) I was trying to connect to the installation from my mobile and
   all I kept getting getting was a 500 error. WHen I looked the error logs it seemed
   like there was insufficient memory. Looking at the processes there seemed to
   be about 12 instances of apache running 2 seconds after a restart. Its a multisite
   installation although traffic is tiny (I mean around 10 visitors a day across
   all sites right now) running on 256mb VPS.
 * With this new info do you have any other advice? Many thanks again.

 * I deactivated all the plugins I wasn’t actually using as a start and it seems
   to have remedied all the problems I was having. Looks like soemthing wasn’t playing
   nice. Thanks for the help 🙂
