    Hi guys,
I raised something previously where I couldn’t underline a heading. I understand that there’s an element of UX/accessibility confusion around this and should be being catered for via CSS, however, I’ve just come to find that I can’t even underline in-paragraph text?!

    What should be a simple

      underline

is not possible without me writing up the content in a “Custom HTML” block… just to underline a single word? Am I missing something?

    Hi,

You are not missing anything, we actually removed this in WordPress 4.7, to quote the editor team from that release:

The underline and justify buttons have been removed from the bottom row. Underlining is a bad practice as readers can confuse it with links (bad accessibility), and it does not insert a semantic element.

Thanks @clorith – but in theory doesn’t the same “issue” exist for strikethrough, yet that remains?

I must admit, I haven’t ever used a screen reader to validate my content, however it does surprise me that a screen reader can’t tell the difference between an underline vs a link? I will have to research how screen readers work, but I have always assumed that they also parse the HTML that’s output? Therefore Link vs <p style=”text-decoration:underline;”>Underline</p> should be fairly easily distinguishable.

More research for me to do I guess!!!

It’s about what is visually seen, not what’s in the underlying code.

Visually, underlined text is often only distinguishable from links by color, which would make it difficult for folks who don’t see that color.

Generally it’s good practice to find any text decoration except underline, and leave the underlines to the links.

    thanks @macmanx – that makes sense 🙂

Clearly I need to brush up on accessibility 😉
