  • Maybe something wrong with the database host. Can you access the database with something like phpMyAdmin?

    Thread Starter gwh

    (@gwh)

    Yes, i can. That’s why i can’t understand it.

    hello,

same problem here, except that I can access the DB with my root account but not with my web8_u1 account. If I use the web8_u1 account to access web8_db1 which is correct, I can login (passwd. correct) but I see no DB. So it seems somewhere the link between the DB and the user is missing…

this problem occured because I am moving my blog to another server.

I have another problem with another site (same server)

this site http://pacura.ru gives me a site nopt found althoug, web6_db1 exists and I can login with web6_u1 and its coresponding password using phpmyadmin. still wordpress is not showing up…

If you guys are using somesort of host that gives you access like cpanel or such. The database name that is created will be prefixed with your account name. For example if your account name is ‘xyzinc’ and your database name is ‘blog’, it would create a database called ‘xyzinc_blog’. I’m not sure if this is your problem but I thought I’d mention it because people overlook it sometimes since it doesn’t affect your phpMyAdmin access.

    thx silpstream

the server we are talking about is my own. teh database name is correct, the username is correct, the password works too as I can login with phpmyadmin.

the problem happened when I transfered my site and database to a new server (also my own server).

I copied the database, the permissions on it and the permissions of the filestructure. all paths and usernames and db names have been kept the same so I do not know why it gives me a site not found. try for yourself, what do you find at the url I gave above?

I had a similar problem with another site, where I forgot to copy the permissions of the DB so I got an We were able to connect to the database server error which I fixed by setting the permissions of the DB, but the problem atm is something else…

    Ovidiu,
Looks like you sorted your problem out! Congrats! What was the fix?

Same prob with GODADDY hosting. Created a blank db and have the correct host, user, pw but cant load WordPress with the /wp-admin/install.php extension. Any experience with GODADDY? Help pls

well, it looks like it took either more than 24 hours for the DNS changes to propagat or I miscalculated 🙁

all the problems described further up were caused by this…

Not to make this boring but I came across the same thing- I put double-quotes around my definitions in the wp-config file and I did create a database (although it says it’s empty-could that be the problem?)
My user name and db name are prefixed with my account name but I can’t find how to change that. Any kind of db name or user name I create has it.
    Any thoughts?

    …not able to select the “Username_DatabaseUserName” database…

What is this? My database is called “Username_DatabaseName” and it has a username “Username_DatabaseUserName”. Why is WordPress installation trying to use the username as the database name?

My domain now shows an error page that contains “can’t select database Username_DatabaseUserName”. It thus PUBLISHES two user names at once. What a great security feature! What next? My passwords?

WordPress installation was supposed to be easy…

ps. Existing database (empty in this case) –> trouble. Let WP install create a database –> success.

Hay, guys who are using the cPanel, please make sure to do the following:
    1. Create the DB
    2. Create user
    3. Select the user the DB and click the “All” option under “Privileges” then click “Grant Permissions” button.
    4. Make sure you got something like this at the top:
    “cPanelUserName_dbusername (Privileges: ALL PRIVILEGES)”
    5. Continue with WP steps.
    Regards,

kinan – too bad yours was the last post in this thread. 🙂 In my current version of cPanel, the option is “Add user to DB”. I had forgotten that step. One click, and all was well again.

Is the problem with “Can’t select database” sovled or not by others? I still have this problem.

I am installing the WP MU version for the first time. I got the same problem “Can’t select database”…

I am sure the database name (myusername_databaname), user name (myusername_databaseuser), and password are all correct.

I used cPanel to create the database and user which has all privilages by default.

Can someone point out what might be the problem with “Can’t select database” issue?

Another problem is the downloaded latest version of “.tar.gz” can not be unzipped by “gzip” or “gunzip” on my Linux server. It says it is not in gzip format. So I guess the file may not be zipped properly. Can somebody try it on your own computer and see if it works?

I then downloaded “.zip” which seemed to work OK. But I had to unzip it on my desktop and then ftp to the server.

Hi, It seems that the current version of WP [2.0.5] have some problems that only those who developed it can solve. I was using the old version and it was working find with out any problem. When upgrade to 2.0.5 the whole of my blog went down. I am still battling with it.

The error message i received is:

[Parse error: syntax error, unexpected $end in /home/youfulf/public_html/wp-admin/admin-db.php on line 210]

    can any one help?

    Thanks
    Nambea
