Can’t save with Wordfence Active

    Whenever I try to save changes to any of my pages, if Wordfence is active, it gives me the following error:

    Your Save Has Failed

    An error has occurred while saving your page. Various problems can cause a save to fail, such as a lack of server resources, firewall blockages, plugin conflicts or server misconfiguration. You can try saving again by clicking Try Again, or you can download a backup of your unsaved page by clicking Download Backup. Backups can be restored using the portability system while next editing your page.

    Contacting your host and asking them to increase the following PHP variables may help: memory_limit, max_execution_time, upload_max_filesize, post_max_size, max_input_time, max_input_vars. In addition, auditing your firewall error log (such as ModSecurity) may reveal false positives that are preventing saves from completing.

    Lastly, it is recommended that you temporarily disable all WordPress plugins and browser extensions and try to save again to determine if something is causing a conflict.

    If I press “Try Again” and retry to save, I then get either a critical error, or it will say the page was updated successfully (even though it was not).

    I already checked my browsers extensions and checked every plug in, and it’s definitely Wordfence that is the issue.

    I already changed it to Learning Mode, with no success.

    I tried looking at “Live Traffic” to see if I could manually add the param to the allowlist (did not show up for me to add).

    *For context, I am using Divi*

    Everything works just find when I disable wordfence.

    Please advise,

    Hi @amperez, thanks for the detailed message.

    Your suspicion that the message above was due to a false-positive in the background would’ve been my first thought too. However, Wordfence records its blocks in Live Traffic, so if Learning Mode isn’t allowing Divi to save, and Live Traffic isn’t showing anything at the timestamps you see the message, then it looks to be another cause.

    Sometimes a conflict between another plugin and Wordfence can be the issue, so disabling Wordfence can appear to be the solution in cases such as that.

    There will be many thousands of sites using Divi and Wordfence together, so when they are the only 2 plugins enabled, are you able to save without seeing the error? If you can, reenable your other plugins one-by-one (testing in between) until the issue returns. Sometimes it’s also useful to revert to a default theme like Twenty Twenty-Five during this process too in case custom code is involved.

    Hi Peter,

    Thank you for the advice! It seems it’s an issue between Wordfence and EventON. I went one-by-one pairing the plugins with wordfence, and this is the combo that created the issue.

    I will be on the hunt for an event calendar alternative!

    I downloaded EventPrime as the alternative event calendar, and I have the same issue. Is there a way to fix the conflict between Wordfence and at least one of these plugins?

    We have tested the plugin on our end and it appears to be working as expected. To help us identify the root cause of the error on your site, could you please provide us with the following details:1. Debug Log

    • Open your wp-config.php file (located in the root folder of WordPress).
    • Add or confirm the following lines just before the line /* That's all, stop editing! Happy publishing. */:define( 'WP_DEBUG', true );
      define( 'WP_DEBUG_LOG', true );
    • Save the file, then reproduce the issue (for example, activate the plugin).
    • A debug log will be generated in:/wp-content/debug.log
    • Please download and share this file with us.

    2. Site Health Information

    • In your WordPress dashboard, go to Tools → Site Health.
    • Under the Status tab, note any critical or recommended issues.
    • Switch to the Info tab and click Copy site info to clipboard.
    • Paste the copied content into a text file and share it with us.

    Once we have both the debug log and the Site Health information, we will be able to investigate further.

    Hi there,

    I am going to type out what I did because I, admittedly, am not IT savvy, so I want to make sure I didn’t miss a step.

    I added the debug lines to the php file, uploaded & replaced on cPanel.

    I then activated the EventPrime plugin and went to edit a page—the Divi for the page did not load, and the website went down. I checked for the debug log in wp-content, but I did not find one. I tried this multiple times and searched for the debug log in multiple folders in the cPanel (and used the search tool).

    Please update this line to:define( 'WP_DEBUG', true );

    This will enable WordPress debugging and allow the system to generate a log file. Once updated, please try to reproduce the issue (e.g., attempt to save a page with Wordfence active). A log file will be created at:/wp-content/debug.log

    I switched it to 8.2. It gave me an MySQL error, but I was able to fix that. I’m still having the same problem though: activating EventPrime causes a “critical error”.
