Support » Fixing WordPress » Can't reorder pages in default menu

  • Hello there,

I am trying to reorder pages into new sections, move some child pages to be top-level pages, etc. I have tried all the ways to do this, but nothing seems to be working.

I can’t reorder the pages from the space to edit metadata on Pages > All Pages. I also cannot reorder them when editing an individual page.

I can create custom menus in Appearance > Menus, but this doesn’t fix the problem because the URL’s still show the pages as children of the wrong parents. It also means that I have to spend a lot of time adjusting my menus manually.

Has anyone else been having this problem? I have already increased my max_input_vars to allow for more pages in my menu. Not sure of anything else that might be causing this problem. Thank you.

  • It sounds like your theme may not support custom menus. If it does, you should see a “manage locations” tab on the Appearance > Menus screen. You’ll need to define your nav menu from there.

By default, WordPress just adds all pages to the main menu, and allows you to control parent/child relationships and page order from the edit page screen.

If your theme doesn’t support menus, you’ll have to edit some code or contact the theme creator.

Hi, dauidus, I apologize; I don’t think I explained this very well before. I am able to create these custom menus and assign them.

However, I am unable to control the parent / child relationships on the edit page screen. I see where I should be able to do this, and I have done this in the past. But now when I try to do this and save, my hierarchical edits disappear.

PS – I am not sure if this would make a difference, but my pages are translated (using WPML).

Oh, I see. I’m not sure how using WPML would influence parent/child relationships and page hierarchies. You might try disabling that plugin to see if the problem persists.

The only other thing I can think of would be that the theme creator somehow disabled the parent/child feature with a custom function.

Let me know what you find… i’m intrigued.

Marty, I don’t know if this is your problem but I lost control of part of the menu options after I loaded the Yoast SEO Plugin. All the drop down boxes just froze and would not function. If I understand you correctly, you can not drag and drop your menu items into different positions. Try deactivating the Plugins one at a time.
Another action would be to try the same procedure on another site and see if it works there.
    Good Luck

@dauidus: Thanks, I’ll check to see if deactivating WPML helps. I’ll keep you posted.

@les: Thank you for the suggestion, but you and I are not having the same problem. I can create custom menus through the drag-and-drop process. I just cannot reorder my default page hierarchy, e.g. I can’t reassign a page to a different parent.
