Hello. I was writing an article, I uploaded several images, I set the featured image, added some tags, then when I was trying to actually publish the article it said something like “Your draft was saved” and the article was not published.

The content of the article was saved, indeed, but it didn’t remember the featured image and the tags I’ve added to that article. Same thing happened on older articles, too, I’ve tried it.

I tried reinstalling WP from the admin, then by uploading manually on FTP. I also disabled all plugins and switched to the default theme. Same result ๐Ÿ™

    Can anyone help? Thank you.

iThemes Security plugin is the only security measure I took + I don’t use a CDN.

Hm, I’m running out of ideas here. When you said you deactivated all plugins, it was definitely all plugins, even iThemes Security?

I hate that I have to ask, but if I had $5 for every time “I deactivated all plugins” didn’t include all of the plugins, I’d be retired on a luxurious island by now.

IMHO deactivating all plugins means “Select All” -> “Deactivate”. Right? ๐Ÿ™‚

    Yeah, that’s what I meant.

When you checked your server error logs, were there just no entries for the time of the problem, or were the logs themselves blank or missing?

No server error logs either. error_log was not there at all. I regularly check them and fix things but this time I was totally baffled about the lack of error messages/logs since there is clearly a big problem.

Would you be able to see if logging is misconfigured on your server? Given the proliferation of bots, it seems highly unlikely that you don’t at least have an error_log with a few 404’s in it.

Perhaps logging is misconfigured, and is therefore not recording any errors, including errors that might point towards the original problem.

James what do you mean by “misconfigured”?

    Moderator James Huff

Basically just that. The fact that absolutely nothing is being logged (there should be plenty of bot-generated 404s at least) suggests that the logs are not properly configured.

I can’t really say more than that though, as now it’s getting into server management, which varies dramatically based on numerous factors.

Since this bug started I also noticed a strange latency when updating any plugins or the core.
Sometimes the update just hang in there and I was forced to manually update after deleting the .maintenance file.

    Any luck with the logs?

    Thread Starter miealex

    (@miealex)

None and I know I didn’t change anything logs wise in server’s config ๐Ÿ™

My guess – about 80% sure – is that my problem is in file permissions setup. Is there any way (any plugin or open source php) that I can set the default file permissions for all files (also uploads) and folders inside my WP install?

No plugin for that, but files should be 644, and directories should be 755.

I set them correctly, so apparently it was not CHMOD. The same problem .. http://sendvid.com/p0ovrhxn

At this point, I can’t suggest much myself. It seems like what’s happening should be recorded in the error logs, and given that your logs are blank, it seems they might be misconfigured somehow (there are plenty of bots roaming the net, which should be trying to access nonexistent pages often, so the fact that your error logs don’t even have a few 404’s recorded seems rather unusual, like the logs aren’t recording anything).

I’ve checked this with my hosting company and they say that the logging is configured properly. I also ran out of options here .. I’ll probably delete it all together in the end.
