I’m really new to all this, but I’ve put together a wordpress site on my local computer and uploaded it to my hosting site. The upload seems to have worked ok (in that the homepage is there online) but it now won’t let me login to the wordpress cms to make changes to it.

Initially it wasn’t recognising my password and when I clicked to have it e-mailed to me the link was invalid. From there I went into php admin and reset my user_pass but still had the same problem.

After that I found the document with all the different password reset options eg delete cookies, copy script from sexy geek girl etc. which I worked through but now when I click ok it just stays on the login screen (although the wordpress formatting has gone since I used the sexy geek girl script).

Really confused – any help would be much appreciated.

  • When you moved from your local system to hosted system, did you follow the Moving WordPress article?

Just in case you need this to fix your WordPress and Blog Address General Setting… http://www.tamba2.org.uk/wordpress/site-url/

password is in md5 encryption…. did you notice that?

Thank you for the quick responses guys.

Ryan – I did notice the md5 encryption but thanks anyway.

Michael – I’ve just followed that article you posted and changed my site url and home from localhost to the address of the web server. Had another go at logging in and it’s still doing the same thing.

One more thing, I’ve just realised I did get into my wordpress once but it seemed to have diverted me to the one on localhost. I went into the settings page and changed the address to the address of the webserver. I then tried to login via the webserver and it wouldn’t let me do it?

Would it be better to try and tidy up any changes I’ve made to my localhost version and start again with the upload?

EDIT – Just changed my locally hosted url back to localhost/wordpress and I can now get in the locally hosted admin section

    Again, review Moving WordPress.

Thanks Michael. This might seem a trivial question but in Moving WordPress it mentions downloading my entire wordpress installation and I’m not sure how to do that? Is the installation the wordpress folder that’s on my local computer?

    Yes

Thanks for all your help. Removed my database and files and started again following the Moving WordPress link – it worked a treat. Thanks again.
