  • I’ve tried commenting out the lines, using the patched login file, and just about every other fix suggested here. I’ve come to realize that the bug seems to be more of a browser specific issue. I cannot get the login to work at all under any circumstance while using the latest Safari 3 beta, but it works just fine in Camino. Haven’t tested it in Firefox, but I would assume that would work since it’s made by Mozilla.

Also, I’m on a MacBook Pro, just for the sake of being specific.

I have the same issue – but thankfully I only loaded 2.3 onto my usb (xampp) for testing so far. 2 machines, same problem:

    1. Machine 1, Dell Laptop, corporate XP Prof, Windows Explorer 7 (Norton)
    2. Machine 2, XP, Firefox 2.0.0.7, and Explorer 6.0.29 (Norton)

Three browser combinations but always at login:

ERROR: WordPress requires Cookies but your browser does not support them or they are blocked.

NB This was before AND after the wp-login ‘patch’ from Ryan – sorry no solution for me Ryan…

So I definitely won’t be upgrading my site for a while and am unable to do any offline development without rolling back to 2.2x

    Fixed.

Took 2 hours of fiddling, but either it was my cached old wp-login file (non Ryaned) that was not flushed, or it was the simple renaming of my \wordpress23\ directory to \wordpress\ and now the cookies/impassable logon screen is gone

    Thanks

I have the same problem. I upgraded my old site to 2.3.

    Now It says:

ERROR: WordPress requires Cookies but your browser does not support them or they are blocked.
ERROR: The username field is empty.
ERROR: The password field is empty.

BUT… The only difference is that whatever it says, I can log in to the admin panel or register a new account without any problem. Im using a Mac OSX Powerbook G4

    Blessings!!

I’m sorry Ryan; it’s still not working with the patch described on http://trac.wordpress.org/ticket/5076.

I upgraded by version from 2.2.2 to 2.3 and I’ve installed WordPress in a subdir and after that I used your patchfile wp-login.php . I can’t still can’t login. (In IE or Mozilla)…

    Pls help.

    Thanks @ amzfx

    Enjoy..!!!

Editing my wp-login.php as directed did not solve the prbolem. Tried also Ryan’s patch and got the same problem.

Pls help, i need to log in to my adminpanel

This is the first time I install wordpress on a clean machine and I get a few errors:
Warning: Cannot modify header information – headers already sent by (output started at C:\Program Files\xampp\htdocs\wordpress\wp-login.php:1) in C:\Program Files\xampp\htdocs\wordpress\wp-login.php on line 12

Warning: Cannot modify header information – headers already sent by (output started at C:\Program Files\xampp\htdocs\wordpress\wp-login.php:1) in C:\Program Files\xampp\htdocs\wordpress\wp-login.php on line 24

and also THE FAMOUS COOKIE PROBLEM
ERROR: WordPress requires Cookies but your browser does not support them or they are blocked.

Is this supposed to be a stable release? what kind of impression do you think this gives to someone new to wordpress?

I am pissed. Maybe its related to Vista or certain versions of Apache…

My WP installation is in a subdirectory. Commenting out {24,313,314} didn’t work for me – the result is just a blank page after login. Adding the 6167 patch by Ryan didn’t work either (same ‘no cookies’ error occurs).

I can’t believe there’s still no fix after two weeks – very unimpressed.

Looks like 2.3.1 will permanently fix the login problem (the reason I opened this thread). Yay! – Thanks WP people =:-)

Turns out I wasn’t having this problem at all – I had whitespace at the beginning of wp-config.php. See http://trac.wordpress.org/ticket/5227

So of course I’ve gone from ‘very unimpressed’ to ‘sheepish and thankful’ 🙂

I have a weird situation. I get this error only in the early to mid morning, but generally by late morning, afternoon, it goes away and I can log in normally, without any problem.

Has anyone else seen this error only at specific times?

What could it mean? Something with my hosting setup (fatcow).

It does not seem to be browser specific, either. I use Firefox, but same behavior with IE.

I have updated my site (wp not in root) with 2.3.1 but with no result. I stil can’t login. Same cookies message.

    Anyone a Fix ??

i have exactly the same problem and could not solve by everything i tried.

I just wanted to add that I did a clean install (2.3.3) in the root and would get this error on both IE and FF.

I tried all the fixes and they would not work.

I then saw something about the config.php and that was my problem. I had strange characters at the start of the file. Once I removed them all was working.

I think that for some people this might be a red herring. If you are having problems even after fixes have a look at your config.php and make sure that it is ok.
