Support » Fixing WordPress » Can’t log in after updating to 4.8/can I downgrade manually then fix?

  • I tried updating to 4.8 today and now I can’t log into my site. The pages that don’t require a log in seem fine. (Site is here: http://realfluencynow.com/)

And I’m sorry, but I didn’t think to do anything with my plugins first. Too much stress lately.

I tried the thing to deactivate the plugins by resetting them by renaming the plugins folder (I do have ftp access) but that doesn’t seem to have done anything.

Is my understanding correct that I could go back to an older version by replacing all but the wp-content directory and wp-config.php? Then start all over?

    Thanks

  • Verify php version

Take a look at this Codex page:
    https://codex.wordpress.org/Login_Trouble#New_Login_File

If that doesn’t fix it then one or more of the core files may have been missed or damaged during the update. You can try reinstalling WordPress manually:

Start by downloading WordPress again from https://wordpress.org/download/.

Then, access your server via SFTP or FTP or the file manager in your hosting account’s control panel, and delete everything on the server except the wp-config.php file and the /wp-content/ directory. You need to do this because some uploaders tend to be unreliable when overwriting files.

Then, where the installation was, upload everything from the fresh WordPress download except the wp-config.php file and the /wp-content/ directory. This will effectively replace all of your core files without damaging your content and settings.

antonioverardi83 – I think it’s php5. Sorry my daughter is home now and I’m trying to figure this out while taking care of her too.

bdbrown – thanks, I will try that. So I’m guessing you think it’s better to go ahead and upgrade manually rather than go back to the old version manually?

I’m going to get my daughter off to her friends and then calm myself a bit before trying so I don’t mess up something else in the process.

Rolling back to a previous version manually is essentially the same process:
    https://blog.tbwhs.com/wordpress-rollback/

Personally, if you’ve already tried the update, I’d recommend trying to get it to go manually rather than try to to backwards. If I had to go back to a previous version I’d rather restore a complete site backup; then you know you have all the pieces that work together in one place.

I reinstalled manually, but that hasn’t helped. When I try logging in, the submit button just keeps saying ‘sending’ but nothing ever happens. I’ve tried with different browsers too and on my phone.

Is your plugin folder still renamed (to deactivate all plugins?)
Have you tried doing the same thing with your theme, which will force your site to use a default WP theme?

    Thread Starter badusername

    (@badusername)

to do that with the theme, do I just need to again rename the folder? And that should deactivate it?

Yes, just rename the folder of your currently active theme.

Here’s another article with a couple of suggestions:

Like where it says ‘dynamik-gen’ – change that to something like ‘dynamik-gen.test’?

Because if that it how it is supposed to be done, then there is some other problem with my hosting or something because I did that and nothing on my site changed.

You have a folder /wp-content/themes/dynamik-gen/, and you renamed that, but your site didn’t change? And all your plugins are still disabled? Are you using a caching plugin? If so, did you clear that folder? Do you know if your host is doing any caching? Or are you using a CDN?

    (@badusername)

I uploaded a plain .html file from another, old site and into the main directory of the site I’m working on. When I tried navigating to that file I got a 404.

My host did some weird things some time ago with my account, and I’m wondering if my ftp account doesn’t go to the correct place anymore. Although that might mean my site is somehow duplicated on one of their servers. At any rate, what it seems like is no changes I make manually with ftp show up on my site.

I need to get in touch with them.

    Thread Starter badusername

    (@badusername)

No, I’m not using a caching plugin and no cdn. I’m going to call them before they close for the day.

    Try to set php version 5.6 or higher;

    Thread Starter badusername

    (@badusername)

Is it supposed to only run on 5.6 or higher now? My control panel let me go up from 5.3 to 5.5 so I did that.

So, also, as it turns out when my host moved my site some time ago, I never got the new ftp information and my site files are also still sitting on the old server so some of the changes I tried to make really didn’t do anything with my actual site.

But I got that sorted out last night and manually updated. That didn’t help so I did the thing with the plugins folder and now nothing loads from my site.

I was told there was someone else at my host who is an expert on WP so today I will get in touch with that person and hopefully get this solved. If I ever find out what the problem was, I’ll post it here in case it can help someone else in the future.
