• I am moving my blog to a new hosting company. My old blog is using version 2.6.1 and I just installed version 2.6.1 on the new hosting account.

I clicked on Manage, Import and uploaded the backup file which was created by wordpress at my old hosting company. I receive the following error message:

Please upload a valid WXR (WordPress eXtended RSS) export file.

I don’t understand why there is a problem or what I should do.

  • Try importing the XML file you exported from old WP blog again. Sometimes, it takes more than one try.

Why is there no specific message as to what went wrong? I have tried three times and it fails without telling me why.

Also, the import function specifies a “wxr” file but the backup creates an “xml” file.

I should add that both the blog that I am exporting from and to are on 2.7.1

Do you have access to the SQL databases on both servers? It might be worth exporting / importing databases that way if the WP exports aren’t taking.
