Can’t import wordpress database backup file

    I am moving my blog to a new hosting company. My old blog is using version 2.6.1 and I just installed version 2.6.1 on the new hosting account.

    I clicked on Manage, Import and uploaded the backup file which was created by wordpress at my old hosting company. I receive the following error message:

    Please upload a valid WXR (WordPress eXtended RSS) export file.

    I don’t understand why there is a problem or what I should do.

    Try importing the XML file you exported from old WP blog again. Sometimes, it takes more than one try.

    Why is there no specific message as to what went wrong? I have tried three times and it fails without telling me why.

    Also, the import function specifies a “wxr” file but the backup creates an “xml” file.

    I should add that both the blog that I am exporting from and to are on 2.7.1

    Do you have access to the SQL databases on both servers? It might be worth exporting / importing databases that way if the WP exports aren’t taking.
