Can I just check this is the correct pdf? It desribes the registered subscriber process so will be useful, but doesn’t seem to be a ‘startup guide’
I’m trying to confirm that I can get the basic fuctionality working before buying the html upgreade. All I plan to do is to allow a simple subscription so that people can register to receive all new posts and unregister. I’d like to centrally register some users, and the rest do it manually, ideally with a confirmation email. Is there anything which describes setting up public subscriptions and the difference between widget and form approach?

You’re right again, that guide is more for the Registered User/Subscriber.
There is no major difference between the Widget and Form approaches. Once deployed you can test it yourself by logging out and using a different email address to the one used by your WordPress login.
You can also view the emails in your own Inbox by using the Send Preview button in the Subscribe2->Settings page.
