Support » Theme: Ignite » Can’t find Ignite theme folder to create child theme

I’m using Ignite and would like to create a child theme. The instructions say to create a new folder in the themes directory, located at wp-content/themes. I seem to have four of those folders under the folders wordpress, wordpress 2, wordpress 3, and wordpress 4. I did not deliberately create these instances but imagine they must have come about because I started dealing with multiple wordpress sites years ago. The Ignite site is the only one I’m designing myself.

However none of the themes directories contain the word “Ignite.” All four of the themes directories contain only folders for the themes of twentynineteen, twentyseventeen, and twentysixteen. How is this possible given that I’m using Ignite for sure? I have done a Mac-wide search for the word “Ignite” and it turns up nothing. And even by looking at update dates, I can’t figure out which of these wordpress 1/2/3/4 instances my site is using, and therefore can’t figure out where to create the child theme folder. Can you help?

This is tough for me to help with because it’s really a matter of the hosting environment which I don’t have access to. If these folders don’t contain “ignite” then it seems likely the site’s files are actually hosted in a different folder somewhere.

To confirm this, you can install another new theme (not activate, just install) and check each of the four wordpress/wp-content/themes folders. If it doesn’t show up then we can be certain the site’s files are elsewhere. Otherwise, there may be a strange issue with the hosting environment itself, but that can be explored next if necessary.

Wow, thanks Ben, that was it! I didn’t even have to install another theme. I just logged into my site host and through there I found the Ignite folder. I had thought all this stuff was stored locally on my Mac, which now of course all makes sense to me; it’s the site host that’s presenting this stuff to the world, not me. The WordPress folders I have on my Mac must be detritus from previous WP.com sites I used to work with. I never would have thought of going to SiteGround to look without your suggestion, so again, thanks for clearing this up, and so quickly. [Despite my checking “notify of me replies via email” I never got one, but came back to check.] Glad I had already given Ignite a great review!
