    If you are on shared hosting, it is unlikely that you will be able to install optipng, if it isn’t working automatically. The exception to this is if the plugin gives you an error about not being able to create the wp-content/ewww folder, or an error about that folder not being writable.
    If you have the ability to install software on your server, then you may be in luck.

    If you run your own server, what flavor of linux is it?

    currently im on ipage but will be switching to another host soon that is faster.

    yup, ipage is a ‘known grey webhost’: jpegtran works, but nothing else does. See this page for more options: http://wordpress.org/plugins/ewww-image-optimizer/other_notes/
