Support » Fixing WordPress » Can’t edit slug until post is saved

  • Permalinks are working fine on my frontend, and when I edit an existing post it offers the slug for me to change if desired (which I always do, because the site is in Japanese but I prefer to avoid multibyte text in URLs). But when I first write a post, it doesn’t allow me to edit the slug – the editor acts as if I am not using pretty permalinks at all. See annotated screenshots at https://imgur.com/a/gaCv3tq – the first image is of the editor window during “Add new post” (with an inset image of my Permalink Settings in case there is any doubt), and the second is after publishing and re-entering the editor.

Is this happening to everyone, or just me?

  • If the post isn’t saved to the database yet, then it doesn’t have a “slug” available to be edited.

Creation of the slug for the permalink only happens when the post is saved for the first time, because the slug needs to be unique so it has to check against other slugs already in the database.

Instead of just publishing a post, you could try Save Draft -> edit your slug -> Publish post.

Oh, okay. I didn’t remember it acting like that in the past, so I thought it might be part of the big changes in version 5.x. Was it always like that? (As for checking uniqueness, in my experience it quietly adds “-2” on the end if it’s not unique, so that’s not an impediment.)
