Despite having a website on my own server (Brulosophy.com), I hugely prefer editing from WordPress.com, which requires Jetpack, rather than WP-Admin. A few weeks ago, as I was going to edit an article, I clicked “Add new post” and was redirected to WP-Admin editor. I figured it was a temporary issue, but nothing has changed.

I do not have an active WordPress dot COM website, I only have my self-hosted site, brulosophy.com, and I have no problems editing from WP-Admin. However, with Jetpack installed, I’m able to use WordPress dot com to check my stats as well as edit posts and pages, it’s what I’ve been doing for years and far prefer over WP-Admin.

After changing absolutely nothing on my end, whenever I use WordPress dot COM to edit posts (https://wordpress.com/posts/brulosophy.com), rather than opening up a new post with the white and light blue background on WordPress dot com, it now redirects me to WP-Admin.

I apologize for the redundancy, just trying to be as clear as possible. I will freaking pay someone to help me with this at this point!

    Thanks!

  • @brulosopher – thanks for your reporting.

We’re still looking into this issue and hope that we will have new update soon.

Hi @htdat, I just noticed the Github thread has been closed and was curious if any solutions have come up for this issue. I’m still unable to edit from within Calypso and would love to be able to!

    From the Github issue:

I believe that’s the expected behaviour. Since we’ve deprecated the classic editor in Calypso, the only option is the WordPress.com block editor, an iFramed version of the editor from wp-admin. You consequently need to be logged in to access that page. If SSO is enabled, we’re able to log you in as you open the WordPress.com block editor. If you don’t use SSO, you have to log in on your own.

So, if you have the Classic Editor plugin enabled, then editing a post from WordPress.com will redirect to wp-admin.

If you don’t have Classic Editor enabled, then you should be able to edit in WordPress.com (as long as you are already logged in to your wp-admin).

Can you confirm if that’s the case for you?

@drawmyface – Thanks for responding! I just deactivated and deleted Classic Editor, which I only reinstalled after last time I tried deleting it for this same issue. I’m not having the same problem I was before, I’ll try to explain it as clearly as possible…

With Classic Editor installed, when I’d hover over a post title in Calypso, it’d clearly show the wp-admin URL, and that’s where’d I’d be redirected when clicked.

Now, after deactivating and deleting Classic Editor plus deleting and reinstalling Jetpack, when I hover over a title, it no longer shows a wp-admin URL and appears as though it’ll keep me in Calypso. Image for reference.

However, when I click the post title to edit, it immediately opens this page, sits there for a few seconds, then redirects to wp-admin.

I can’t figure out for the life of me what exactly isn’t connecting, as I’m pretty certain I’m logged in to all the things. Any help would be much appreciated!

And now I can’t even access the normal wp-admin. When I try to go there, it redirects me to Calypso, where I can’t access Jetpack settings. This is frustrating…

    Very frustrating!

You mentioned earlier that you use the WordPress.com desktop app. Have you also tested using WordPress.com in a browser?

Just so we’re 100% clear what’s happening here, could you once more deactivate ALL plugins except Jetpack, then test in both the WordPress.com app, and in a browser, and let us know what happens in each case?

    Thanks!

    (@brulosopher)

Hey @drawmyface, thanks for the response! Actually, I do NOT use the desktop app, but rather prefer writing/editing from the Calypso web browser. I was able to figure out a way to get back to the normal wp-admin from .com, so we’re good on that.

I did as you suggested by deactivating all plugins, still no fix, same redirect issue.

Since I do prefer Classic Editor, I reinstalled it for now, but I’m willing to ditch it if it means Calypso will work again.

Hey @brulosopher. Since you’re not using the app, it sounds like things are working as expected here, once we get that redirect fixed.

As @drawmyface explained, being redirected back to WP Admin when the Classic Editor plugin is installed is the way this works now. There is no way to use Calypso with the Classic Editor.

To edit in Calypso, you’d need to remove the Classic Editor permanently and then stick with the block editor. If you’d like to get that working, please delete the Classic Editor plugin again and then clear your site and browser cache.

I suspect that the redirect you were seeing was simply due to something stuck in cache that was lingering from when the Classic Editor was installed.

Let us know how that goes 🙂

Hi @tmmbecker, thanks for the reply. I just deleted the Classic Editor plugin, deleted and reinstalled Jetpack, then cleared my browser and site cache. After re-logging in to WordPress and clicking on a draft to edit in Calypso, I was redirected back to wp-admin after spending a few seconds on a gray screen with a sad face in the middle.

    Plugin Contributor Dan (a11n)

    (@drawmyface)

When you see the sad face with the ‘refused to connect’ message, what URL is shown in the address bar at that point?

    Thread Starter brulosopher

    (@brulosopher)

Hi @drawmyface. To answer your question, I’m referring to the latest article published on my site (https://brulosophy.com/2020/11/30/dextrin-malt-impact-of-carapils-on-hoppy-pilsner-exbeeriment-results/). When I click to edit it, the screen goes gray and the URL is:

    https://wordpress.com/post/brulosophy.com/129057

After a few seconds, I’m redirected to wp-admin and the URL changes to:

    https://brulosophy.com/wp-admin/post.php?post=129057&action=edit&calypsoify=1&block-editor=1&frame-nonce=1606933036%3A3%3A4e4300b95b4765c2fbaf770667590616&origin=https%3A%2F%2Fwordpress.com&environment-id=production&support_user=&_support_token=&in-editor-deprecation-group=1

When I click “Add new post,” I’m taken to the gray screen with the sad face and an error message saying, “brulosophy.com unexpectedly closed the connection.”

    UPDATE:

It’s been 2 days since I deleted the Classic Editor plugin, and as much I still really don’t like the block editor, I’ve been making it work. Unfortunately, this all has to be done via wp-admin, as when I try to edit in Calypso, it still redirects me.

Oddly, despite not having reinstalled Classic Editor plugin, the URL that shows up when I hover over a post is no longer the same as it was 2 days ago, but rather shows the wp-admin address. For example, here’s the URL that comes up with I hover over the post I was using a couple days ago:

    https://brulosophy.com/wp-admin/post.php?post=129057&action=edit

No longer do I see URL with the numbers at the end or first go to a gray page, rather I’m immediately sent to wp-admin.

@brulosopher I see the same behavior on the WordPress.com dashboard, which would indicate your theme or another plugin is not compatible with the WordPress.com editor.

Let’s rule out a plugin conflict first. Disable all other plugins and keep Jetpack active. Then disconnect and reconnect Jetpack to your WordPress.com account and see if you can edit posts there again.

I did notice there’s a Tiny MCE plugin active, which is only for the Classic editor, so that might be the culprit, but I’d like to disable all the plugins first.

If things start working again, start turning your plugins back on one by one until you see the same problem again. That will indicate the plugin that is incompatible with the WordPress.com editor. This might be a good chance to audit the plugins you have activated and remove any you’re not using.

Let us know how that goes!

@csonnek – Happy New Year! I thought I’d replied to this a month ago, but apparently I didn’t. I disabled all plugins and the problem kept happening.

This has been happening to me for a long time, too, on half a dozen sites with all kinds of various setups. Most notably it happens on a site with no activated plugins other than Jetpack. I tried deactivating, uninstalling, and reinstalling with no luck.
