Support » Fixing WordPress » Can’t create small thumbnails that show all of image in version 4.9.8 of WP?

I copied the contents of a remote site (using WordPress 2.9.2) to a site on my local computer (using WordPress 4.9.8).

I have a problem with the new version when attaching images to posts. For example I have an image that is 474 x 504 pixels.

In 2.9.2 when I attach it, I am offered the choices of
    Thumbnail (141 x 150)
    Medium (282 x 300)
Large (this option is greyed out)
    Full size (474 x 504)
This is fine, I choose Thumbnail because I want to keep the whole image in the correct aspect ratio and want it to be about 150 pixels big.

In 4.9.8, I am offered the choices of
    Thumbnail (150 x 150)
    Medium (282 x 300)
    Full size (474 x 504)
If I choose Thumbnail, the image is cropped to a square 141 x 141 and then expanded to 150 x 150. This is not what I want. I could choose “Medium” and then calculate img attributes width=”141″ height=”150″ but that is tedious and wastes bandwidth.

Is there a way of altering image size choices in 4.9.8? Perhaps I could hack the php source that offers that?

You can change your default image sizes at Settings > Media in your site’s Dashboard.

    Many thanks. That did it.
I went to Settings > Media and unticked the box “Crop thumbnail to exact dimensions (normally thumbnails are proportional)” and clicked “Save Changes” (I’m always forgetting to do that because it’s below the bottom of the screen.)

Now any new images uploaded can be thumbnailed the way I want them.
