• Hello,

I just wanted to change my password after long time and there is no option in my edit profile, where can I choose my own password. I can just generate a new one.

Does somebody know how to solve this issue, please?

  • You could do a Forgot Password from the login page. I think it lets you create a new password when you follow the link sent via email.

I haven’t tested it, but if my memory serves me right, this should work

Thank you Ramesh, but it doesn’t work and doesn’t solve this problem :/

Sorry, my memory has NOT served me right 🙁

If you have access to the database, you could directly set a new password via PHPMyAdmin. Make sure you use the MD5 function to the value before storing. Here is a screenshot taken from one of my blog posts – http://thecodeisclear.in/wp-content/uploads/2015/09/wp_users_2.jpg

    Hope this helps.

    Cheers,

Thank you Ramesh, My PHPMyAdmin looks quite different and I have no option there like you.

I thought that it will be more simple to find solution, WHY there is no option for choosing password and how can I get it back.

    Hello,

The most recent version of WordPress has changed the profile options, instead of entering your own password, you can only generate a new one.
This is actually pretty important, as most users enter very easy and vulnerable passwords. When WordPress generates a password for you, it focuses on a secure set of characters that will ensure your website is secure against hacking.

As Ramesh did mention, the only other alternative is to manually update the password through PHPMYADMIN in your MYSQL database.
Here is a link to a full tutorial on how to do this: http://www.wpbeginner.com/beginners-guide/how-to-reset-a-wordpress-password-from-phpmyadmin/

    Thanks,

This is an annoying step from WordPress.

Choice is everything. I admin multiple sites on my own server for business clients. I have a secure password policy that enables me to create secure passwords that are different for every site, but that I can infer from my knowledge of my own rules for creating them. I do NOT require a nanny to create them for me, although the option is nice.

Whilst I can log into MyPHPAdmin and create passwords there, it’s an annoying and complex step, and I don’t like being forced to jump through hoops because of someone’s assumption that I’m not capable of taking care of my own security.

WordPress should make the auto-generation a “recommended” option. If users of sites on my server prefer to have insecure passwords it should be possible to do so, but at their own risk and after giving suitable warnings.

Either that, or allow passwords to be created manually to a set of rules which can be chosen by the Administrator of the site.

This is my first ever serious moan about a WordPress policy. I hope it gets re-considered. It’s a totally draconian change and not what we expect from friendly open-source WordPress.

This is a brilliant scheme by WordPress developers to allow me to charge an arm and a leg for clients who want their own specialized “god” or “asdf1234” password. I love it!

Users can choose their own password.

    Go into the profile page

    Click ‘Generate Password’

highlight the generated password and type the password of your own choice over it.

If a weak password is input, you will be prompted to select a checkbox to confirm that you want to use this password (don’t do this – choose a better password instead)

    Click ‘update profile’

Cubecolour is correct. I just went though the password generator.
