    Hi,

While configuring my WP site from the default Twenty Twenty-One theme, at some point I realised that the comments section is not available on any of blog posts on my Posts Page.
I remember when I accessed the plain theme, the “Leave a comment” form was available at the bottom of each post along with comments added. From my admin panel, I can still see one sample comment added to a sample post (“Hello world!”) which came with the theme. However, it’s not visible on the published website.

I’ve been searching through the whole net to figure this out for hours, but couldn’t find a clue. Suggestions are enable comments Settings (site level) and for the associated pages and individual posts, which I have done already – screenshots attached below. And I suppose individual post settings would overwrite higher level settings (pages and site)?

What am I missing here? Enabling and disabling comments sounds fairly straight forward.. and I find myself silly spending hours and still not getting it work. Perhaps, is there a theme-related configuration that will enable/ disable comments? Or have I accidentally messed up comments related codes?? I didn’t modify any codes directly, but using plug-ins such as Twentig and Options for Twenty Twenty and Twenty Twenty-One. Twentig is still in use but I deactivated Options for Twenty Twenty and Twenty Twenty-One (which has lots of custom features) because I find configs for Options for… plug-in conflicting Twentig plug-in and WP default configs..

Screenshots of how comments are enabled for my site, page, and post and the comment itself:

  • According to your screenshots, you should see the comment form, and the one comment that is there on the Hello World post. (this comment comes with WP, not the theme)
You are correct to think that individual post settings override the main setting for enabling comments. That main setting is only for the new content default.

My guess is that the plugins you used have influenced it. You would need to ask in the plugin’s support forum for help with that.
Have you tried previewing your site in the Customizer with a different theme, to see if the comment form shows? Do you have a cache plugin?

Thanks for the comment Joy. If I switch to a different theme, do I lose all the customisation I’ve done with 2021 when I switch back??
Also, what do you mean by cache plug-in? what is it for?

Oh I just remembered that “Options for twenty twenty” plug-in had an option to turn off various meta data and I unchecked comments from there (as at the time I wanted to go absolute minimal). This was when I was playing with twenty twenty theme and changed to twenty twenty one theme and deactivated Options for twenty twenty plug-in. I thought all the changes made with twenty twenty would stay with that theme and won’t affect anything on a different theme. And deactivating a plug-in will reset any changes made with that plug-in. Is my thinking flawed?

No, each theme’s options are stored in a separate entry of the options table. Besides, previewing a theme does not change anything for the current theme.

If you don’t know what a cache plugin is, it’s unlikely you have one. It is for saving pages so they don’t have to be regenerated each time, but they can become stale (when you change an option like comments that seems unrelated).

I thought all the changes made with twenty twenty would stay with that theme and won’t affect anything on a different theme.

That’s what I would think also, but I don’t know how the plugin is coded.

And deactivating a plug-in will reset any changes made with that plug-in. Is my thinking flawed?

A plugin can make database changes that are still in effect even after the plugin is deactivated. Deactivation means that the plugin is not executed. It definitely does not mean that any changes are reset.

Thanks Joe. I’ve learned some new things from you today.

I tracked down the issue, it’s a plug-in that is in active use. I had to look through all the options in my customiser. I thought that “Display comments section” checkbox was with the other plug-in (Options for…) that’s been deactivated, but I was wrong.

Comments section is back now. How silly, but a good lesson for me. I will need to be more conscious when configuring through plug-ins – they open up new possibilities, but it’s easy to get lost and when lost unlike native WP features, support isn’t always there.
