    Similar problem with 3.7.1 update. I get to the unpacking and it just stops. I cannot install new plugins either – same thing, stops at unpacking. Help please anyone?!!!!!!!!

    The error message indicates that the PHP process is not able to create the folder needed by the WP application to upgrade the site. Try a manual upgrade – you can try to download the latest WP version here:

    and upload the archive to your “/home/2/l/lampala/www/” folder. After that extract the archive and replace all the files. Once you do this you can access the site admin dashboard and you should see a page which will upgrade the site.

    IMPORTANT: Always create backups before making such changes. This way if something goes wrong you will be able to restore the site.

    My second advice is to contact your web hosting provider and ask them to check the Apache error log files on the server. I suppose that some of the permissions of your site are not correct. If you have SSH access you can use the following commands to apply the correct permissions:

    find /home/2/l/lampala/www/ -type f -exec chmod 644 {} \;
    find /home/2/l/lampala/www/ -type d -exec chmod 755 {} \;

    The above mentioned commands will change the permissions for all folders to 755 and all files to 644 – in most cases these are the correct permissions for web hosts that are properly configured to run WordPress sites.

    Thanks Daniel. I did a manual upgrade and everything is good again. I’m new to all this, and at my age things take a while to sink in!

    I really appreciate you taking the time to explain things so well.

    Thanks again,
