Can’t automatically set first/lead image of post as thumbnail or featured image

    I need the lead post image to automatically be set as the thumbnail or featured image. This doesn’t seem like it would be challenging but it is! I need this to happen automatically as part of the theme post settings and not have to manually go in and set the featured image for each post. I have been working on it for hours and it doesn’t seem possible. If I’m missing something please help. If not, this would be a required update to the theme to use lead post image as thumbnail or automatically set lead/first post image as featured image of post.

    Hi,
    in your lists of posts (blog/categories/archives…) the theme, by default, will use the *last image attached* to the post if no featured image is set.
    As the option “If no featured image is set for a post, use the last image attached to this post.” in Appearance -> Customize -> Main Content -> Post lists: blog,archives,… -> THUMBNAILS OPTIONS says.

    It’s important to note that, as per WordPress, the same media can be attached to only one post at time.

    I inquired about this awhile back, also. This resolved my problem:

    “It’s important to note that, as per WordPress, the same media can be attached to only one post at time.”

    I was reusing media and didn’t get the association until now. Thank you for clearing this up for me.

    I removed the checks from these boxes – still not working after attempting the use of multiple plugins that claim to take the first post image and set it as featured image!

    It appears that images in posts are not being added to my media gallery – which may be the problem. As posts are published, aren’t the images in the posts added to the media gallery? Is this a setting?
