can't add thumbnail to post

Hi every one. I made a theme by my own and can’t add thumbnail to the post’s . I have the custom field section on my wordpress enabled . I added the image url to the value field and Thumbhail to the Name field and press (add custom field) and nothing happened .I think I must add some php script to the my theme .
