    The whole purpose of the read more link and excerpts for posts is so you can provide a shorter version of the content for displaying on archive pages, with the full content displayed on the single post page.

    Term descriptions, however, are only displayed on the term archive page, so having support for excerpts or read more tags would not make sense, at least not to me.

    Shortcodes seem to be working fine for me in term descriptions, both built-in shortcodes like [gallery] as well as ones added by plugins. Are you using the latest plugin version (1.4.1)?

    Hi Shea thank you for your reply , well in the website I am working on ,there are 50 categories + sub categories each has a a very long description text,so in the archive page I display all the titles of the categories + their description ,so it makes more sense to show title + a few words of each description and a “read more” link ,to the full content of that category .

    actually there is a read more link in your plugin , but it doesnt work ,it does nothing, I am trying to understand why?and how to make it work.

    can you help ?

    thank you:)

    Hi,

    I understand what you’re saying. This sort of functionality doesn’t exist in WordPress by default. Term descriptions work sort of like pages in that there is a button for the read more tag on the editor, but it has no effect on the site.

    It’s possible to build this feature, but like I said it doesn’t exist already and I would have to create it for a future version of the plugin.

    Since you’re showing all of the categories with their description on a page, would an alternate template tag be possible? Something like vtde_short_term_description(), that you can use in your theme templates?

    thank you again:)you are very kind ,I see now what you mean about category description that works like pages.so I understand now that I have to take a new approach to this problem.
    what is this function–>vtde_short_term_description(), do?

    It will output the term description before the read more tag. You could use this template tag in your archive page templates.
