Thanks for the reply. I just downloaded Yoast and it appears in my list of plugins, but I am unable to activate it. No errors.
In this thread, this person discovered that they had a weird folder structure: www/httpdocs/wordpress/www/httpdocs/wp-content/plugins and they solved the problem by deleting the additional folders.
This thread suggests two solutions, the one being to run a repair on the database, specifically the Options table, the other was that the problem was caused by a caching plugin.

@robhob thank you. Reparing the databases worked in my case. I just selected them all and did the repair. Took only a few seconds.
