# Cant access admin or

 * Very new to all of this…Ihave just done a fresh install to my root dir. i can
   see the home page ok [http://beautybyjlr.com/](http://beautybyjlr.com/) but when
   i try to navigate away to tha wp-admin page i fill in the username and password
   fields hit log in and i just get an Internal Server Error

 * Looks like your site is throwing 500 errors. Do you any .htaccess files on the
   domain?

 * Check your file permissions. Typically, I see 500 errors when there is a file
   permissions/ ownership issue. Keep in mind, 500 errors are generic in nature.
   You really got to look in the server’s error logs to find the error that’s causing
   it. I hope this helps!

 * I have tried installing from the controll panel and manually uploading the files.
   As to file permissions at no stage of the install has it asked me to alter any
   file permissions…. Which ones do i need to alter.

 * Hard to say. It’s not usual to have to alter file or folder permissions at this
   stage. As Tim S suggested, go right through your server’s error logs. There are
   likely to be more pertinent errors in there that might help you.

 * WordPress wont have you alter the file permissions during installation. It really
   depends on how your server is set up. Typically, it’s the first thing I check.
   If it’s not file perms then you need to check the server’s error log.

 * There is a .htaccess in the root dir. i have had a look at it with notepad2 and
   it seems to be a blank file. is this normal

 * WordPress uses an htaccess once you use permalinks. But until then, if my memory
   serves me right, it remains blank.
