    Hi,

I recently noticed an issue with the URL structure of my products on my WooCommerce site. Specifically, each product has two versions of URLs, illustrated as follows:

What alerted me was the Google Search Console, indicating thousands of pages with the “Duplicate without user-selected canonical” issue. Upon checking these URLs, I noticed that the canonical tag always points to the URL combining the main category and sub-category.

I am concerned about the SEO implications of this situation and want to ensure my site is correctly indexed by search engines.

Knowing that I use WooCommerce + Yoast SEO, could you guide me towards a solution to address this URL discrepancy while retaining only the category + subcategory permalink ?

Thank you in advance for your assistance.

    Best regards, Mighty

    Hi @mighty13

The issue you’re experiencing is due to the default behavior of WooCommerce and Yoast SEO. WooCommerce creates a URL for each category and sub-category combination, while Yoast SEO automatically sets the canonical URL to the one with the most categories (main + sub-category).

To solve this, you can use Yoast SEO’s URL setting to force a specific canonical URL. Follow these steps:

    1. Go to the product page in your WordPress dashboard.
    2. Scroll down to the Yoast SEO meta box.
    3. Click on the “Advanced” tab.
    4. Under the “Canonical URL” field, enter the URL structure you prefer (main category + sub-category).
    5. Save your changes.

Please note that you will need to do this for each product.

Further information can be found here: https://yoast.com/help/canonical-urls-in-yoast-seo/

Alternatively, you can use a plugin like Permalink Manager for WooCommerce to customize your URL structure, but this might require some technical knowledge to configure correctly.

I hope this helps! Please let us know how it goes or if you need further assistance.
