Support » Plugin: Permalink Manager Lite » Canonical redirect doesn’t seem to work

    Hello,

I have ‘Canonical redirect’ enabled but on my site I have posts with the following structure: domain.com/parent-category/child-category/slug/

The canonical url is the same structure as above

(child category is set as the primary category within Yoast)

If I visit: domain.com/child-category/slug/ it correctly redirects me to: domain.com/parent-category/child-category/slug/

But if I visit: domain.com/parent-category/slug/ it will retain that url but has the canonical url set as: domain.com/parent-category/child-category/slug/ whereas I would have hoped this one would have also redirected?

Does anyone know how to achieve this?

    Thanks so much 🙂

    Hi @tjldesigns,

Please make sure that also “Redirect mode” setting is set to “301 redirect”.

Theoretically, the canonical redirect should work with both URL variants. Apparently something prevents it when URL with only the /parent-category/ slug is present.

Could you by any chance provide me with a sample live URL where the canonical redirect is not triggered?

    Best regards,
    Maciej

    Hi Maciej,

Thank you so much for your reply, it’s much appreciated.

I can confirm that the Redirect mode is set to ‘301 redirect’

And please see example links below for the site (this is the development site, but exactly the same happens on live as well):

https://dev.caci-realityhouse.temporarywebsiteaddress.com/insights/case-studies/crisis/ (this is the correct url).

https://dev.caci-realityhouse.temporarywebsiteaddress.com/case-studies/crisis/ (this redirects fine to the url above).

https://dev.caci-realityhouse.temporarywebsiteaddress.com/insights/crisis/ (this is the one that sadly doesn’t).

Thanks so much for your help :),

    Hi @tjldesigns,

If you look at the post with ID #3393, it does not look like it has a custom permalink set. It means that even if Permalink Manager is turned off, the canonical redirect probably also does not work correctly. Could you please confirm this?

If you want to use the “extended canonical” redirect functionality included in my plugin, you must first save the custom permalink for this specific post. Permalink Manager saves the custom permalinks when the post is published or updated.

    Best regards,
    Maciej
