• WordPress newbie here and I’m driving myself crazy. I’m trying to upload and select a custom theme that I downloaded here on wordpress.org (Mystique) and have hit a road block.

Here are my steps so far:

    1. Signed up for a hosting account with GoDaddy
    2. Installed the wordpress software using GoDaddy’s “quick install” process
    3. FTP’d the nested theme folder into the directory html/wp-content/themes
    4. I go to my dashboard on wordpress.com, select Appearance, Themes

…and this is where I’m stuck. Nowhere do I see an option to select the custom theme I uploaded. I even upgraded to the CSS editor, which I’m not sure if I needed to do.

One other thing. I signed up for wordpress.com with the standard name.wordpress.com URL. I then purchased “Domain Mapping” to assign the blog to another domain I have with GoDaddy (I changed the nameservers to NS1.WORDPRESS.COM, NS2.WORDPRESS.COM, and NS3.WORDPRESS.COM).

Any guidance of this would be greatly appreciated. I’m about to pull my hair out!

  • Hi ihateaplia

WordPress.com? i don’t think you can choose your own theme if you have account in wordpress.com. If you have a selhosted wordpress site, then you can choose your own theme. Does it work with default theme?

Thanks for your help Kim09. Yes, it works with the default theme or whatever theme I choose out of the 80 or so themes that WordPress.com offers. So I’m a bit confused on WordPress.com and .org – If I want to use a custom theme, does that mean I never use WordPress.com?

If so, I’m not understanding how you choose which theme you’d like to use. I watched this video: and it appears the narrator is using the WordPress.com dashboard, but he is able to upload his own theme.

    ihateaplia,

This is a wordpress.org forums, this post explains the difference between .com and org 🙂 Only with wordpress.org we can upload/customize themes. If you have an account for example, ihateaplia.wordpress.com, then you can only choose available themes. In the video, that only can be done if you run a selfhosted wordpress, means, you buy a domain and webspace. But there is a free webhosting which can runs wordpress.

    Kim09,

Thanks again for your help. I understand wordpress.com and .org are different, and I’ve already bought a domain and hosting space from GoDaddy. I’d like to use wordpress.org so I can upload custom themes.

From what it looks like in the video above, however, is that you can upload a custom theme using an FTP client (and the wordpress.org software), then select and customize this theme on the wordpress.com dashboard. If this is not possible, how do you select which theme you would like to use if you have multiple themes in the remote folder html/wp-content/themes?

    Thanks!

Nevermind, figured it out! I needed the username.com/wp-login.php URL
