Could you try to check for Javascript errors when you click on the Publish/Update button, as explained here:
http://codex.wordpress.org/Using_Your_Browser_to_Diagnose_JavaScript_Errors
It could help us find out more about the issue on your site.
Thanks!

Hi Jeremy
Steps taken so far…
1. Can replicate problem in Chrome, as well as Safari.
2. Added “define(‘SCRIPT_DEBUG’, true);” to wp-config.php file. Problem remains.
3. Viewed Javascript console in both Chrome and Safari. So relevant errors evident upon loading of pages, and certainly nothing appears when i Publish/Update a page or post.
(FYI, this is the only display in Console “event.returnValue is deprecated. Please use the standard event.preventDefault() instead.”, which i presume is not relevant)
4. To further clarify the issue…I can deactivate Jetpack plugin and pages/posts can be published/updated. I can activate Jetpack and still ok. But when I Authorize Jetpack by connecting to WordPress.com, I can no longer publish/update.
When my website was local only in development, I did not have to Authorize Jetpack on wordpress.com, so I never experienced this problem. It’s only when my website became hosted that I needed to authorise Jetpack to access all the features (such as Publicize etc).
Could you try to deactivate the Spelling and Grammar module, and let me know if it helps? You can follow the instructions here to learn how to deactivate a Jetpack module:

Great, that did the trick Jeremy. Deactivating Spelling & Grammar fixed the problem…pages and posts can be published/updated now.
I didn’t realise you could deactivate some modules. So thank you for your help. I’ll wait to see some documentation in the future before trying to activate that module again. It’s no great loss.
Andrew
It would seem that your site couldn’t contact the Spellchecker service, and caused the page to hang instead of go ahead with the publish action.
If you use a security plugin or a service that restricts access to your site, you might want to turn it off to make sure it doesn’t block communications with third-party services like the spellchecker.
