@bob did you request support from Dreamhost? Had any reply? To me, they gave me instructions how to ask the “password remminder” thing…

Like they didn’t understand whta I’m saying.

Delete all your WordPress browser cookies and try again.

I’m having the same problem. Seems I was helpfully upgraded by Dreamhost without my knowledge, and today I can’t log in!
I’ve tried deleting cookies and resetting the password but neither work.
I’m using Firefox v.3 on a Ubuntu system, if that makes any difference…

I am having the same problem. I’ve been through all the old posts and tried everything. I use FF3 and IE7 on two different computers, with 2 different versions of Windows. Nothing works. I just get returned to the login page without errors.

PS I am hosted by bluehost. Only one out of four blogs has the problem. It is in the root directory.

i just opened a ticked with dh. i’ll let you know what they say.

seems to be some kind of plugin issue. this is the reply to my ticet:

Hmm, the issue appears to be related to one of the wordpress plugins.
I’ve renamed akismet, which fixed the issue with logging in.

I am having the same issue.

I followed the http://codex.wordpress.org/Login_Trouble step by step.

As per this post, I renamed all of my plugins.

I still get the login page over and over again.

    I’m hosted at Westhost.com.

I upgraded on 8/26/08 to WP 2.6.1 from WP 2.5

Sometime in the last week, I did recently automatically update the Akismet plugin when I noticed the notification to upgrade.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I finally got in by deleting wordpress automatic upgrade plugin. I thought I had tried that earlier. I don’t know why it would suddenly be causing a problem.

it seems to be the wp-super-cache plugin. It was recently updated and made a conflict.

Can you remove it completely and see if it works now?

I did not have wp-super-cache plugin installed. Where is the automatic upgrade plugin stored? I don’t have it in my plugins folder, but I am notified if I need to do an automatic upgrade.

I renamed my plugins folder to _plugins and voila! I was able to log in.

    On this blog, I have:
    1 bit audio player
    akismet
    contact-form-7
    events-calendar
    disable-revisions
    smilies-themer
    wp db backup

I did re-install each one and right now I am still able to log in.

    Curious.

Of all these plugins, I wonder if we could narrow down to one that everyone who had this issue has.

I’m suspecting akismet, since that is the most likely to be on everyone’s list, and was recently upgraded.

But not everyone who has akismet had the failure – yet.

    Hmmm…

I’m back into my blog – after sending a support request to Dreamhost they apologised for a bug but didn’t actually do anything to solve the problem. So I went into my web FTP via Dreamhost and renamed the Askimet folder to _askimet, and this seems to have worked.

I’m back in too. Thanks for this thread!

Akismet wasn’t the culprit. I think there’s a corruption of plugins during upgrade, but it doesn’t seem to be a specific plugin. It’s not host specific either.

Your best hope is to rename your plugins directory, re-create it empty, and re-upload your plugins. You can do this with FTP or ssh/telnet.

As a general rule, before doing any upgrades disable plugins. Plugins can cause problems. If you have an automatic upgrade plugin, get rid of it, unless you can stay up with the times enough to upgrade or disable your plugins before your wordpress is upgraded. They cause problems oftentimes.
