Cannot install multisite

    Hi

    I have wordpress multisite up and running on my main computer but am having big problems with my laptop. I am able to get a single site working but have tried with both MMAP and Bitnami and in both cases, after following every aspect of the installation process, I cannot get multisite to work. Bitnami got me closer to the goal but once the sites are created in network settings, they simply do not open (404 error). It will allow the main site to work. This is very frustrating as I need to develop sites for work. Please help!

    PS Laptop is an Apple Macbook running a Snow Leopard OS.

    Generally I find the 404 is from the .htaccess not being updated during install.

    If you have subdirectories, then multisite may work, but subdomains will likely have a problem. I don’t know of an easy way to specify a wildcard domain, but I have managed to do this a few times, so I know it’s possible. I believe I used a DNS proxy called Acrylic, which you download and fire up after Apache. Not sure if it works on a Mac, but if not, you should be able to specify the hosts file with your specific subdomains. The manual process might not be a pretty solution, but it should work.
