 * Trying to build a new website in wordpress without overwriting an existing one
   that lives on another host.
 * 1) I’ve logged into the new cPanel and created a new MySQL database, user and
password. I then downloaded WordPress to my computer. I want to upload it and
store it in new folder, for example [http://www.mynewsite.com/new](http://www.mynewsite.com/new)–
to keep from overwriting the existing site. Will this work?
 * 2) My other question is I have no idea where or what to upload the files to?
I thought it was via an ftp site- I have a temporary ftp host so I uploaded the
wordpress files there but when I go to the website and bring up [http://www.mynewsite.com/new](http://www.mynewsite.com/new)
nothing shows up to continue with the install and login.
 * What am I missing or not doing – I know it’s gotta be something simple I’m not
   figuring out…
 * Thanks!

 * Did you upload contents of wordpress folder in new folder?

 * Yes I uploaded everything that was in the wordpress folder I downloaded to my
desktop to the new folder on the temporary ftp site.
 * I’m wondering if I’m not seeing anything because it’s a temporary ftp address?
Does the fact that the existing site is on another host all together?

 * The new folder you created is it in root of the domain name. I do not understand
temporary ftp address as with FTP all you do is transfer files to server.

 * No it’s not on the root of the domain name, it’s in a temporary ftp site that
is composed of all numbers. The domain name is still registered and being used
on the clients existing site, which we don’t want to take down until the new
   site is ready to launch.
 * I’m having a hard time understanding where on the new host I’m supposed to put
the wordpress files. I called the host and asked them about this and they said
WordPress is already installed it’s just a matter of transferring the databases??
That’s what’s confusing me, is this something I just put into the cPanel and
   not ftp?

 * Usually with a temporary ftp site, the username and password they provided (case
sensitive), and the IP address of the host you are going to connect to. This
should be all you need to connect to the ftp server.
 * Perhaps, instead of using a temporary ftp site to build, you could do this: [http://wordpress.org/support/topic/can-i-view-a-wp-site-built-in-a-subdirectory-of-my-static-html-site?replies=5](http://wordpress.org/support/topic/can-i-view-a-wp-site-built-in-a-subdirectory-of-my-static-html-site?replies=5)

 * I’ve been in contact with the hosting provider and they keep telling me to install
   wordpress from the control panel???
 * I went into the cPanel and to the mySQL and created a new database and username/
password which is what I thought I was supposed to do and then tried to upload
the WordPress files to the server. The only FTP information I received was the
temporary ftp address. I keep asking him about this and he keeps telling me I
don’t need to do that it’s done through cPanel.
 * This is my first time with WordPress, I feel like I’m missing something that’s
   right in front of me….

 * This is what I would do:
 * Ignore the temporary ftp site.
 * Then: do you have an FTP client such as Filezilla or CoreFTP (…both are free,
open-source and install on your computer in minutes)?
and… do you have FTP access
to your client’s site? (a username and password)

 * I’m currently using Fetch as my FTP client
The clients current website is hosted
by someone else in which I do not have access to that FTP login, they want to
move to this new hosting provider when they launch the new wordpress site.

 * So, to clarify, there is an entirely new site with new domain name that the new
site will be hosted on, correct?

 * It’s a new site on a new server but with an existing domain.
 * Figured out the problem, there is a problem with the actual domain name and the
way the host has his servers set up. It’ fixed now but I had to have someone
go into cPanel and edit the database structure.
 * Thanks for everyone who was helping!
