 * Just recently I updated the WP version (old 2.7) using auto update. After a few
   minutes the admin panel froze.
    Now I find that the site displays correctly [http://www.moultonvillage.co.uk](http://www.moultonvillage.co.uk)
   but when I attempt to login to admin the status bar reports trying to connect
   to [http://www.moultonvillage.co.uk](http://www.moultonvillage.co.uk) This remains
   for several minutes before I get a screen displaying
 * > Internal Server Error,
   > The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration
   > and was unable to complete your request. Please contact the server administrator,
   > webmaster@localhost and inform them of the time the error occurred, and anything
   > you might have done that may have caused the error. More information about
   > this error may be available in the server error log. Apache/2.2.3 (CentOS)
   > Server at [http://www.moultonvillage.co.uk](http://www.moultonvillage.co.uk)

 * 1. Interestingly if I go to the public pages the site displays fine and I see
   a drop down at top right telling me I am logged in.
    2. I have followed the instructions
   at [http://codex.wordpress.org/Login_Trouble](http://codex.wordpress.org/Login_Trouble)
   to no avail. 3. Disabled plugs by renaming plugin folder – no success. 4. Done
   a manual WP update via FTP to the latest version following the instructions at
   [http://codex.wordpress.org/Updating_WordPress](http://codex.wordpress.org/Updating_WordPress)
   still no admin screen. 5. I have tried disabling the theme (ifeaturepro) by renaming
   its folder in the hope that WP would default to one of the standard themes but
   that just prevents the site from displaying at all. 6. The WP database was checked
   and reported all was well. 7. I have used several browsers with the same result
   and someone else with a separate admin logon has also received the same problem.
 * Help

 * That is way too big an update to make in a single step! As you had such an old
   version of WordPress, you should have carried out a series of smaller manual
   upgrades. See [Upgrading_WordPress_Extended](http://codex.wordpress.org/Upgrading_WordPress_Extended)
   for the full details.
 * Do you have a pre-upgrade database backup?.

 * No old db backup in place. What you say about too big a step may well be right
   with that great gift of hindsight but we are where we are.

 * I’m sorry but it’s possible that your database has now been irretrievably damaged
   by the huge update. Try asking your hosts if they have a database backup you
   can use.
