Cannot generate good link to child page

I just changed some pages from upper-level pages to child pages. The *old* urls were http://www.example.com/page_name, and the new urls are
http://www.example.com/parent/page_name. I’ve tried leaving page_name in the same directory, and I’ve tried moving page_name into the subdirectory parent, and I can’t get to it either way. Please help.
