While on your Plugins Page, you read the description for Akismet. In the description are the hyperlinked words “WordPress.COM API Key“.
Click the link.
That takes you to the Signup Page
Read carefully – you can sign up for a WordPress.COM blog or just the key. Either option is fine. Either option will get you the key (and nobody says you must use the blog…)
You’ll get one key. You’ll use it for both of your blogs.

HandySolo: I have already tried that. I created a WP.com account without a blog and got a key. When I paste the key into either blog, I receive the error message in a red block stating:
Your Key Appears Invalid. Double-check It.
Awesome. But you neglected to mention that you HAD a key in your initial post.
How long has it been since you received the key?
Anything helpful here? http://akismet.com/faq/

We’re closing in. I just created the key this morning. I read the FAQs and decided to type in the key(rather than paste) after waiting two hours. I still receive the Invalid error message. How do I know if my Host can make outgoing HTTP requests? The Host is A+ Net, and they seem to handle everything else without problem.

HandySolo or ANYONE:
Everytime I try to enter my Askimet Key into WP, I receive an error message that says “Your Key Appear Invalid-Double Check it.” I have registered two new WordPress.com accounts just to get new keys, and none work even when I type rather than paste in the numbers.
I have an old WordPress.com site with a working key. I even tried using that functioning key with my 2 new sites, and I receive the same error message.
What could be wrong? HELP!
Thanks!
Rich
Your host needs the ‘fopen’ function available on the server for Akismet to work.
where do i go if i’ve deleted the email that contained my API key?
i don’t think i need it because i did have another blog with an API key and i used it (i believe correctly).
how do i know if the plug in is truly activated?
Hello!
I’ve tried to enter api key for my site on WP in many ways and for some days, but every time I get “The key you entered could not be verified because a connection to akismet.com could not be established. Please check your server configuration.”
In my phpinfo:
allow_url_fopen On
What else can i do?
Thanks!
Contact your host. They may have a firewall in place blocking access. If so, they need to allow access to rest.akismet.com
