 * Hello,
    I am trying to edit a user’s Role. I would like to set this user up as
   Level #1.
 * Yet if I select Level #1 from the User’s dropdown menu, then click “Update User”
   at the bottom… the setting does not “stick”.
 * When the User’s page reloads, the role is back to “Subscriber”.
 * This user registered via Facebok.
 * Is this problem a setting I have modified in error?
 * Thank you for your help!

 * How?
 * It sounds like you have a conflict between s2Member and whatever plugin or method
   you are using to register from Facebook.

 * Ah yes…
    They are registering via: WP-FB-AutoConnect Here is their information:

 * Any idea how could I start to troubleshoot this?
    How to… well, start to track
   down where the problem lies?
 * Thank you!!

 * I’d start by testing whether you can change the user role with WP-FB-AutoConnect
   deactivated. Then I’d contact that plugin’s developer to explain the issue.

 * Odd.
    Just de-activated WP-FB-AutoConnect. Then tried to mdofied the user… yet
   once again… same thing. I select Level 1 from the dropdown menu, click “Update
   User”. When the user’s page reloads, it is back to “subscriber”.
 * Still checking over here what could be the issue.

 * I think this is something to do with my s2Member plugin.
 * I disabled WP-FB-Autoconnect, and I still cannot a user’s role.
 * Any idea what I could try?

 * s2Member does not prevent the resetting of user roles. Most likely, you have
   a conflict between s2Member and another plugin (or your theme).
 * Turn all the other plugins off and change theme, and see if you can change role
   then. If so, you have a conflict. Then just turn things back on one by one, and
   test each time, and you’ll identify the culprit when the problem recurs.

 * Going to do that now, and report back.
    Thank you

 * Ok!
    It has been tracked it down. When I de-activate the iThemes Security plugin,
   everything works as it should.
 * I can change the User’s Role without a problem.
    Yet if I activate iThemes Security,
   the problem comes up again.
 * I will contact the iThemes Security team, and see what they suggest.
 * I will report back here in the interest of spreading the fix.

 * [@knucleheads](https://wordpress.org/support/users/knucleheads/),
 * I really wouldn’t recommend using any security plugin with s2Member. Why not?
   Three reasons:
 * 1. s2Member already does many of the things these plugins do, so there is almost
   bound to be a conflict;
 * 2. Many (most?) of the remaining security “fixes” are either not worth bothering
   with (even counter-productive), or can easily be done by another method;
 * 3. Most important of all, the most effective security for your site will never
   be provided from within WordPress. It needs to be done from outside. In other
   words, you need a good host who knows what it’s doing. This is one of the reasons
   why managed WordPress hosting really is the way to go. Much more can be accomplished
   by your host than can ever be done using a WordPress plugin.

 * Good info KTS915.
 * Thank you.
    Regarding #3, I bought a small VPS. I know that maybe hosted all
   of this is taken care for… yet I find great pleasure in doing all this myself.
 * Uphill? Most definitely.
    Yet I enjoy setting things up myself.
 * Will see what else I can do!
